IceCast

TestLab develops an IceCast solution for harsh conditions together with European Space Agency.

TestLab is currently developing a program called IceCast, which in the first phase includes the more efficient and economical running of ships in ice conditions. It is not just a matter of exploring icy areas from space but the solution utilizes strongly the algorithms developed by TestLab. The space can be utilized in naval navigation and for example transfer of ships’ real-time data to ports.

IceCast is a service for sea traffic to help navigation planning in ice covered water areas. IceCast will improve marine safety, enhance the predictability of travel times and save bunker cost for vessels operating in ice conditions. This service will be created and piloted with a geographical scope of the Baltic Sea in the first phase. However, the service will be built technically for global markets.

IceCast project is a ESA partly funded project. It was earlier concluded that in navigation there is a need for more accurate situational awareness in ice conditions which could be obtained by combining AIS data with near real-time satellite images, and advanced algorithms. However, no service provider was found that could have had the proper environment to make the idea into a service.

TestLab IoT Platform is a platform for maritime related services. The platform is already live with two space assets and currently under pilot usage with several companies around maritime cluster. With IceCast project, TestLab will further enhance the offering of this platform. IceCast module will bring the kind of capabilities as earlier project concluded.

The ultimate goal of the IceCast module is to

  • Provide advanced information about ice routes
  • Ice routes conditions to improve route optimization

In practice this means route optimization with:

  • Improved fuel optimization
  • Improved estimated time of arrival accuracy
  • Improved safety risk awareness

IceCast provides advanced information about

  • Ice route locations
  • Condition of the routes

Information is provided in graphical mode completed with numerical data. At the moment there is no supplier to provide this type of info.

IceCast module is available via IceCast client with internet connection.

The info sources in IceCast are

  • Ice route locations are based on icebreaker given waypoints and AIS data analysis
  • Condition of the routes are based on AIS data analysis using mathematical algorithms

Ice coverage is visualized by using satellite image based analysis.
